Steelers' Russell Wilson limited in practice with calf tightness
PITTSBURGH -- Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was limited in Thursday's practice due to tightness in the calf he injured during training camp.
Coach Mike Tomlin did not specify when Wilson, 35, notified the coaches about the issue but mentioned that the quarterback will undergo further evaluation as a precaution.
"His calf tightened up, so we're being cautious," Tomlin said. "We'll assess the situation again tomorrow and take it from there."
Wilson was originally set to speak with the media on Thursday afternoon but has postponed his availability to Friday due to the calf issue.
Wilson first injured his calf while pushing a sled during the team’s conditioning test just before training camp. He was sidelined from throwing passes during team periods for 10 practices after the injury. By the end of camp, Wilson had gradually returned to full participation, though he missed the first preseason game and played only six series over the final two. After playing five series in the second preseason game, Wilson reported feeling "great" and "strong," and said the calf issue wasn’t a concern.
When asked about the potential long-term impact of Wilson’s new calf tightness on Thursday, Tomlin dismissed it as having "none" and downplayed its significance for the team’s game plan against the Falcons on Sunday.
"It really doesn’t [affect game-planning] at all, to be honest with you," Tomlin said.
Should Wilson be unable to play, Justin Fields, who was edged out by Wilson for the starting role, would take his place. Tomlin expressed confidence in Fields, the 2021 Bears first-round pick.
"I’m extremely comfortable if that is the case, certainly," Tomlin said.
Due to Wilson’s injury during training camp, Fields received extra reps with the first-team offense, which could prove beneficial if he needs to step in.
"I don’t know the specifics or what’s going on, but Russ is a great competitor," wide receiver Van Jefferson said. "He wants to be out there. If Justin has to step in, he’s more than prepared.
"But at the end of the day, we’re just going out there to play. Whoever gets the nod, the job still has to get done. Both quarterbacks are capable, and we’ll roll with whoever is out there."
