Bangladesh completes historic Test series whitewash over Pakistan with a dramatic recovery from 26-6.
Few gave Bangladesh a chance when they arrived in Rawalpindi less than two weeks ago. Expectations were low for them to win the series, despite their spirited performance in the first Test and their precarious position at 26 for 6 in the second Test's opening innings. However, Bangladesh made a remarkable comeback to achieve a historic 2-0 clean sweep over Pakistan on foreign soil.
Bangladesh became the second team to achieve a clean sweep in a Test series in Pakistan, following England's 3-0 victory in the 2022 series.
After the opening day of the second Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was washed out, Bangladesh, having chosen to bowl first, dismissed Pakistan for 274 runs, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz claiming five wickets. However, the visitors found themselves in a dire situation when Khurram Shahzad and Mir Hamza's initial spell left them at 26 for 6 within just 34 deliveries. Facing the prospect of a humiliating total, Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz staged a dramatic recovery. Litton scored a century, and his partnership with Miraz added a crucial 100 runs, bringing Bangladesh within 12 runs of Pakistan's first-innings total.
Bangladesh has become the second team to achieve a Test series whitewash against Pakistan on their home soil. On August 25, in the series opener, Bangladesh secured their first-ever Test victory against Pakistan after 14 attempts. Over a week later, they completed their fourth Test series whitewash, marking their first against Pakistan. The previous whitewashes were against the West Indies in 2009 and 2018, and against Zimbabwe in 2014. This also marks Bangladesh's second clean sweep on foreign soil, following their 2009 series win in the West Indies by a similar margin.
Additionally, Bangladesh is only the second team to record a 3-0 clean sweep in a Test series in Pakistan, following England's 3-0 victory in 2022.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Shanto struggled to find words after their six-wicket win in Rawalpindi. "It means a lot, I can't express it in words. I'm really happy. We aimed to win here, and I'm very pleased with how everyone performed. The work ethic of our pacers was impressive and contributed to our success. Everyone is committed and determined to win; I hope this continues," he said during the post-match presentation.
